Geocache Description:

June 2012: Tresco gets its first new cache since 2004 thanks to the kind agreement of and help by the Tresco Estate, to encourage cachers to return to this beautiful island among beautiful islands; it really is a jewel in this azure ocean! At the time of hiding, there were no other Letterbox Hybid caches within 50 miles of this one!

First, a little history: You'll find many Woodcocks - a fine local name - in the graveyard on Tresco and a lot of them are Williams.

William Woodcock, son of William Woodcock and Eleanor Jenkins, was born about 1786 on Tresco. He married Ann Deason in January 1812...

William Woodcock, son of William Woodcock and Ann Deason, was born about 1812 on Tresco. He married Celia Jones in August 1837 in Parish Church, St.Mary, Isles of Scilly...

William Woodcock, son of James Woodcock and Florence Jenkin, was born about 1827 on Tresco. He married Elizabeth Hall in October 1850 on Tresco...

These days Tresco is better known for a different Bill; Bill Bryson, the American anglophile author. He's often found praising the island in print and is a frequent visitor too, running (as part of a celebrity relay team) in the Tresco marathon, the Scillonion equivalent of the London marathon, in 2006.

Locating this Geocache The cache is NOT hidden at the given co-ords. This is the highest point of Tresco, at 44m above mean sea level. A fine place to view the island/s, but you don't need to visit this spot to find this cache. Instead you have to ask yourself, are you brave/foolish or not? The cache is hidden within 2 miles to the south and to the east of the given co-ords.

Brave: Visit Pipers Hole (entrance at N49° 58.056 W006° 20.606. Approach with care from the east) where, after a clamber down (not recommended for children or those caching alone) and a squeeze in, you'll find an underground lake. Beside it, a metal number attached to a rock. This number is E in the formula below. Take care coming out as the rocks can be very slippy. Best avoided in wet or stormy weather. You do not need to cross the lake and a torch is recommended! Now go to the Not Brave location below.

Note, there is now a New Virtual Cache at Piper's Hole: Pipers' Holes: Virtual Reward.

Not Brave: Beside a pond at N49° 56.825 W006° 19.760 you'll find info about some unusual fish. You'll also find a four figure number here. Call it ABCD. To find F used below, F = (Ax(((C-B)xA)/D)). If for some reason you can't find the cache and the code number in it, needed to find the Scilly Series Bonus cache, make a note of D...

To Find the Cache: The box which you seek is at-

Brave Cachers: The given Northings, MINUS 00.BDE and at the Westings given at the top of the cache pages, MINUS 01.(E+2)(C-3)6.

or

Not Brave (but Smart) Cachers: The given Northings, MINUS 00.(B/A)((F+((C-D)-1))(F+(B-C)) and at the Westings given at the top of the cache pages, MINUS 01.(A+1)((F+6)xA)(A+(C-4)).

At the calculated co-ords (in the sea or someone's garden? You've miscalculated!), you should find yourself at a very peaceful spot, even for the Scillies. Take a while to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and find that cache! Please make a note of the number inside it if you plan to find the bonus cache, use the stamp - which makes this a Letterbox Hybrid cache. Please don't remove the stamp! - and reseal and rehide the box with care after signing in. Please trade up or trade even and - most importantly - enjoy your visit to this idylic corner of the world. It really is a very special place.
