In 1895, James Storrie, his wife and new born baby left their home in Hawthorn to take up their newly selected land in Sassafras. It had only been a year previously that the government had opened up the land for free settlement and so they made their way by train to Bayswater and then walked from there to Sassafras, carrying their possessions and pushing their child in a pram.

They originally lived in a log cabin whilst James cleared the land and made what money he could. In 1907 he finished building Kelway, a guest house on the property, which became very popular amongst travellers.

Be aware, there are abandoned mine shafts in this area! Watch out for snakes. Do not attempt on days of extreme bushfire risk. Be aware, it is slippery in the mud!
