Bennie Simcox arrived in Australia in around 1859 from Birmingham, England, aged 18 years old. He had come to seek his fortune in the gold rush and proceeded immidiately to the Emerald Diggings where he did do quite well. He moved back to Collingwood where he lived for a time, but the call of the hills brought him and his wife back.

He selected land in the Monbulk area, near the head of the Emerald Creek, that he named Nathania Springs after his joy of finding the natural springs that are the source of the Emerald Creek on his new property.

Mrs Catherine Baynes, the wife of another selector in the area during the 1890s later recalled her first meeting of Bennie Simcox. It was only the Bayne's second day in the bush on their selected land and they were unaware of any other human presence when Bennie, a big man, came striding through the bush with tattered clothes and a wild unkept beard he suddenly appeared out of the forest. Bennie had heard the axes on the creek flat and had come to greet his new neighbours.

Be aware, there are abandoned mine shafts in this area! Watch out for snakes. Do not attempt on days of extreme bushfire risk. Be aware, it is slippery in the mud!
