Geocache Description:

Located along the Water of Leith Walkway at the site of Woodhall Mill, the cache is close to the lower path. If approaching from the west, there are gaps in the fence to get down to the cache. This cache replaces the original Woodhall Mill cache that was muggled. It is not far from the position of the original cache.

The original cache was one of a series of caches originally set to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the first written record of Juniper Green in the Colinton Parish records (Nov 18th 1707). Juniper Green 300 has its own web site www.junipergreencc.org.uk with lots of information and pictures, from which some of this information is taken. There was a mill operating on this site from as early as 1677. It was mentioned as a lint mill in 1749. There were lint ponds in the Belmont Road area of Juniper Green. The mill was changed to a paper mill in 1792 and began producing printings, writings, blottings, cartridges, tea paper, grey paper and blue paper. In 1845 the mill was solely producing brown wrapping paper but was quite small until it was expanded in the 1950s. In 1954 the mill was acquired by Inveresk and with large investment was converted into a board mill in 1957 (including board for whisky cartons). The 1960s were boom years for this mill and demand for board was so great that the mill moved to a four shift continental system working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The mill closed in 1984, and is mostly demolished with only a few walls, and the concrete floor still visible. There used to be a ford at the bottom of the weir close to where the cache is. See also The Sapphire Project.

This cache is Very Large! It is a metal drum 28cm diameter, and 40cm deep, so bring all your big swaps - including jigsaws! The metal band around the top is very stiff to open, so bring strong fingers.

The Water of Leith Walkway is very well used, so please take care of muggles, although you should be well out of sight of them. Please ensure that the cache is hidden again in the way in which you found it - essential on this one please, as boys and bored fishermen go wandering sometimes! The LRT bus No 44 runs along Lanark Road close to the cache. (Juniper Green Post Office stop - except that the post office has now gone, and has been replaced by a cafe/newsagents.)
