This waypoint is not the cache location, but the location of the
first clue. The parking above is the park and display type (Free on
Sunday, of for the first hour). If you don't mind walking you can
usually park for free at N 51° 47.422 W
000° 39.712.
The cache will take you on a walk around the town and then into
the hills to locate the final cache, which is a regular plastic
container in a camouflage bag. It contains the usual goodies. The
first to find will also find a certificate from us.
Ok on to the cache…..

The Rothschild's built the current Tring Market in the 1880's.
The Market is located at N 51° 47.715 W
000° 39.532. There is a farmer's market here every
second Saturday. For an updated list of the market days have a look
at this document
You will find a marker here advising the market was re-opened in
200(C).

Turn right along Brook Street passing the Robin Hood pub and
cross the high street. You will find the Memorial Gardens these
gardens are dedicated to those who gave they lives during World War
2, it's a nice peaceful place to go. Here you will find some nice
seats to sit on. One of them at N 51°
47.657 W 000° 39.429 was donated by the Trehanger
Ladies Club on the occasion of their 25 th Anniversary in September
19(A)(A).
If you are looking for a coffee of lunch we can highly recommend
Buttercups at N 51° 47.663 W 000°
39.520 which is across the road from the Memorial
gardens.

Now go to a quiet place for a welcoming sit down. You will find
this place at N 51° 47.660 W 000°
39.637.
Mr John ??? Wilson was on this earth from 1929 to 1998. If A=1
and B=2 etc, then (D) equals the number that is the second
letter of Mr Wilsons second name.
While you are here admire the 13th century Parish church of St
Peter and St Paul, the building you see today is mainly 15th
century, and a feature of interest is the unusual design of the
stone corbels in the arches of the nave.

After resting a while head right down the high street. Notice on
your left the old entrance to Tring Brewery, birthplace of many a
sore head I imagine. When you get to N
51° 47.604 W 000° 39.786 you will find the old
post office, not much postie stuff here anymore except an old stamp
machine. The old post office is now a restaurant. Which I must
admit we haven't tried yet. In yesteryear a book of stamps could be
purchased here for only 50 pence.
Now head back towards the church and turn right into Akeman
Street (follow the signs for the museum), have a look at the Market
house on the corner (now a Spec savers, should have gone there),
this used to be the old firehouse with bell in the tower on top. It
was opened in 1901 and designed by Lord Rothschild's architect,
William Huckvale. It was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's
Diamond Jubilee.
![Victoria Hall](https://imgproxy.geocaching.com/330f570cfa8a319ed66a935d95c2d471ce6591e3?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geocache.co.nz%2FUKCaches%2FGCRQZD%2Fvictoriahall_thumb.jpg) |
William Huckvale designed many of the buildings in Tring
including the Rose and Crown hotel that you have seen opposite the
Parish church. He also designed the Victoria Hall which is at
N 51° 47.589 W 000° 39.747.
The Victoria Hall that was originally built as a theatre. But was
used as a pickle factory for some time, it is now used as a council
building for the Dacorum Borough Council.
You may notice yellow sign at the front of the Hall with a Large
H and the three numbers. Add all three numbers together and then
subtract two, this will give the value of (B).
|
Further on up the road at N 51°
47.574 W 000° 39.747 you should find a Baptist chapel
that was built in 1808, and was rebuilt in 1832. The previous
Pastor Mr Glover was so popular the chapel was named "Glovers
Chapel".
Now go to N 51° 47.464 W 000°
39.693, here is where will find the famous Walter Rothschild
Zoological Museum, if you haven't already done the great cache by
the Ollies "Animal
Magic (GCKCKD)", I would recommend you pop into the museum and
get the clues for that cache.
The museum was opened in 1892. It was built as a coming of age
present for a young Walter Rothchild.
Have a look across the road at another William Huckvale designed
building "The Louisa Alms Cottages".

Ok now you need to head to the cache, start your journey by
going to a walkway at N 51° 47.438 W
000° 39.611 and crossing the A41 via the over
bridge.
The final Co-ordinates are:-
N 51°
46.(A)(A)(A) W 000°
3(B).(C)(D)(E)
Please replace the cache as you find it or better, replacing all
the elements of the hide.
While in Tring Park I would suggest you also have a look at our
Tring Mini Micro Series - Tring Park (GCTNH9) and
also RIDGEWAY RUN - Tring Thing (GCNY23)
Some things you might see doing this cache (click on the
images to expand) :-
