Geocache Description:

This is a cache in a series of caches associated with the “Tour de Calumet Trail”. These caches were designed for those who enjoying cycling. You can however choose to hike the trail but be forewarned it is 10 miles one way. I have included several parking places along the trail. This will help you choose the distance you which to travel at one time perhaps if feel inclined to do the trail from start to finish, or break it up in small parts. Choose the parking location the fits your needs I frequently ride along this trail and have hiked it as well. There is much to see and enjoy for those who enjoy nature. The trail is in close proximity to the Indiana Dunes National Park and runs parallel to the shore of Lake Michigan (approx. 1 mile inland in most areas). The trail travels through many ecosystems, marshland, prairie, grassland, and woods. There are many different species of plant life and an abundance of birds and wildlife. I encourage you to come enjoy what the trail has to offer….

This is a trail that is part of the Hoosiers Rails to Trails program and is part of the collection of trails that link up and connect to the Chicago trail systems. The calumet trail is made of crushed limestone and is not paved. However is fairly easy to ride on. I would not recommend small bikes with training wheels. There is no water available on this trail. Please bring water!!! There are two South Shore Train stations that have public facilities with water fountains. Dogs are welcomed on a leash. Bug spray would be a good idea. And by all means watch out for deer…
