William Kirkpatrick came to Sydney from Belfast, Ireland in November 1838. Sydney at the time was rife with unemployment and so he and his family accepted free passage by the government to travel to Melbourne, which was then in the process of being settled. They arrived at Hobsons Bay in April 1839, a long way from their home in Belfast.

William set up a store at the Emerald Diggings in 1858. he was also a blacksmith and a butcher. The police station for a while also operated out of his store. His son, John joined the police force and his daughter Mary married William Stuart, a buckjumper who also later joined the police force.

Another son of William Kirkpatrick, Matthew Kirkpatrick became the earliest settler of the nearby township of Cockatoo Creek.

Be aware, there are abandoned mine shafts in this area! Watch out for snakes. Do not attempt on days of extreme bushfire risk. Be aware, it is slippery in the mud!
