This is an entry level find for newbie geocachers: The Entered
Apprentice. You're tasked with discovering the secret sign that
Entered Apprentices use to identify themselves by.
Stage #1:
Nathan Hale
memorial @ 40°52'16.90"N 73°25'29.31"W. "I only regret that I have
but one life to give my country." Micro sized cache with
co-ordinates to Stage #2. Public parking in the immediate area --
which doubles as the Farmers Market on Sunday mornings, 7am to
noon, in the Summer. Beware of muggles. Be like Nathan, the
nation's first spy: Stealthy!
Huntington was occupied by British troops for six years starting
in 1776 and sufferd many hardships, the worst being the desicration
of the town’s Old Burying Ground by building
Fort
Golgotha over it -- using timbers pillaged from the Old First
Presbyterian Church and repurposing tombstones as floors,
fireplaces and oven liners. Bread baked in these ovens often bore
inverted inscriptions from the headstones and became known as
“tombstone bread.”
Stage #2a: At the loose end of a chain you'll find
something to add to both of these co-ordinates:
40°52'15.96" N 73°25'24.13" W. The trick here is to correctly
interpret the number -- but persist until you get that "aha!"
moment, when it'll all make sense! This chain replaces the
original cache which was located here and is now, hopefully, less
easily vandalised!
Stage #2b: Small size cache with logbook, well hidden in
plain sight on the ground. Sign the logbook to claim your find.
Trade geocoins and travel bugs here -- not enough space for
treasure. The cache was relocated here on 10/11/2009 in
mitigation against it being muggled again at the previous
stage.
FTF prize was a solid brass
George
Washington inscribed "Washington, Soldier, Statesman,
Freemason" coin (reverse: Liberty Bell inscribed "Proclaim Liberty
Throughout All The Land Unto All The Inhabitants Thereof --
1753").
Stage #3 (optional): "Dedicated to those patriots, who
around such poles in the past, planted the seeds of liberty, giving
their lives in the struggle",
Sons of the American Revolution, Huntington N.Y. Chapter.
You're encouraged, but not obliged, to upload a photograph of
yourself at the location of this inscription, very discretely
displaying the secret sign of The Entered Apprentice
geocacher -- without obviously giving it away -- the instruction
for which is contained inside the "drop" at the final stage: A nano
sized cache. Please do not try scraping the icon out of the
nano. Its stuck down on purpose. That's all it is. Just an
icon.
Congratulations on being inducted into the somewhat
mysterious, slightly technical, secret society of geocachers. You
may now discretely exchange the secret sign of The Entered
Apprentice with fellow geocachers everywhere!
