Geocache Description:

The listed co-ordinates are not for the cache but take you to an interesting feature. The cache co-ordinates are hidden in THE PARK. That interesting feature is a Grade 2 listed post box Also nearby is the Birkenhead 400 ATC Squadron. Many thanks to the Rangers who have allowed me to place this cache.

THEN PARK

5Birkenhead Park is acknowledged to be the first 3

publicly funded park in Britain. º

2It was the forerunner of the Park's Movement and its influence was far reaching 3. both in this country and 7 abroad - most notably on Olmsted's design for Central Park, New York.5

8Designed by Joseph Paxton (later Sir Joseph Paxton) in 1843 and officially opened in 1847 it was an immediate economic and social success. W

0Its history is inseparable from that of Birkenhead town itself. 0 Distanced from the ravages of the Industrial Revolution in Liverpool and the North-West by the physical barrier of the River Mersey, 02.Birkenhead retained its agricultural status until the advent of the steam ferry service in 1820. 6Ready access from 7 Liverpool now opened up the Wirral for development and prompted the rapid growth of Birkenhead as an industrial centre. 4

The actual cache location is in the Upper Park and can be accessed by foot 24hrs a day. It can also be done as a drive by as long as you come after dawn but before dusk. There is no need to climb any fences or go onto private property whilst searching. Birkenhead Park can get very busy (even though this area is probably slightly quieter than the lower park) so please act with stealth and remember to put back the cache exactly as you found it.

Also nearby to this cache, there are some great local caches:

Birkenhead Park Stroll

Birkenhead Priory

Big Arno Black Box Of Knots*

*This cache turned out to be my 400th when I decided to place this one. On On to 500!
