Most times the Menominee River runs deep and slow and stretches
almost 100 yards across. At Piers Gorge it gets rowdy. Bedrock
walls channel the flow into an 80-footwide sluice, part of a
mile-long stretch of swift water and rapids topped off by a
crescendo of thundering ledge drops. It is a striking scene of big
water throwing its weight around, the roaring soundtrack a
not-too-subtle warning to stand clear, or else. Quieter scenes also
play out here. One could spend hours musing over the current’s
patterns etched in the bedrock. The forest is a pleasure to the
eye, and eagles and ospreys scan from above for an easy meal
Cache is located off the Piers Gorge hiking path. Terrain can be
slippery, use caution. Cache IS near steep cliffs and water so be
careful!
