Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the plantigrade series. They are designed to be completed in conjunction with the multi-cache Plantigrade but it is cool if you just want to do this one.

The cache is a 200ml sistema container located on the eastern side of the bridge.

Prior to 1858, the entire area east of Ferntree Gully was devoid of settlement. Gold was discovered near here in the November of 1858, and initially brought about 60 miners to this place. A small township sprang up, almost overnight. Victoria was right in the middle of the gold rush, and the mere mention of the word "gold" would send people into a frenzy. So, it is no surprise that by March 1859, the number of miners in the region had risen to close to 1000! In May 1859, a map reveals the area was called the "Emerald Diggings". There are still remnants of the 'water races' - a method for finding gold - along the track, if you have a sharp eye.

Watch out for snakes. Don't leave the track as there may be abandoned mines. Do not attempt on days of extreme bushfire risk.
