Geocache Description:

Hilltop, 260 foot; overlooking Cheltenham, Mt. Holly NJ, Philadelphia & sights up to 34 miles. Silver mag. Bison.
Wonderful parkland (Apr. Oct. 6am - 9pm, Nov.-Mar. 6am-6pm), FREE: art museum, mansion tours & library ( Fri.to Sun. 10 to 4PM) , playground, ball fields, paths, woodland, picnic groves, hilltop & other parking,(fees for: mini-golf, batting cages, snacks & driving range), Take some time & enjoy the Ryerss’ Legacy.

On the border of Abington, Montgomery County, The Ryerss Family left 68 acres of their estate hilltop Burholme, (which means a good home in country setting) as a Philadelphia Park for the people forever, in trust with the Fairmount Park Commission. From the top of the famous sledding hill, near the 1859 Burholme Mansion (visit link) & 1926 rear museum addition on clear days you can watch planes near International Airport in SW Philly (17 miles), see downtown Philly (10 miles) 205 to 210 magnetic, see buildings in : West Phila. 225 m 6 miles, overlook Cheltenham (¼ mile), see Mt. Holly bearing 130 m 16 miles. On a few very clear days you can see the bridge in Wilmington, Delaware 225 m 34 miles away.
In 1905 the Widow, Mary Anne Ryerss moved to the gatehouse on Oxford Ave. at Verree Rd. so the mansion & park could be opened to the public. The gatehouse is now a Funeral Home near the posted coordinates for The Oddification Mystery Cache. There are other caches & 5 benchmarks in 1 mile area. Note the small pet cemetery near N. side door. A favorite horse, Old Grey is buried at N.40 04.168 W. 075 05.430. The Ryerss retirement home for aged horses, a public charity was across the street at 40 03.972 w 075 05.297 it is now in Chester Co. Ryers’ St. & train station are misspelled, Ryerss is short for Ryersson. A benchmark disk (NOTE NOT IN PARK: this BM is 1/4 mile outside the park in a business area,) is in curb at war monument at Burholme’s original SW property line 40 03.683 W 075 05.000. (There is a BM on hill in park, but I can't find it, I think it's buried.) Be Stealthy. Best viewing when leaves are off trees, but all can be seen through trees all year. Check the 2nd floor windows in library for views also. WAYPOINTS: Allow a tour of Park & old property & nearby areas near old town & turnpike.
