The Birds Of A Feather series highlights the unique birdlife and avian habitat of the local area. We’ve seen all these birds at or near the cache sites and hope that in your geocaching, you too will see these wonderful winged creatures. And do take the time to enjoy the amazing dike system and mountain views as well.
Barn Owls, most recognizable by their "mask-like" face, are the most widely distributed species of owl, and one of the most widespread of all birds. They are also referred to as the Common Barn Owl. Contrary to popular belief, they do not hoot like other owl species. Instead they produce the characteristic shree scream.
Barn owls occupy a vast range of habitats from rural to urban. They prefer warm climates with mild winters. Nearby open grassland is essential, however, for hunting. They will nest in many different locations, including trees, cliffs, caves, riverbanks, church steeples, barn lofts, hay stacks, and nest boxes. Barn owls are almost never found in deep forests or mountains. We have seen these owls on the west side right by the main dike gate as well as by the barns on the east side.
BYOP-please put cache back carefully as it can easily fall out.
