When you think of Ecuador´s National Parks, you think of the
Galapagos, the Avenue of the Volcanos or the Oriente (Amazon). This
Ecological Preserve, Manglares-Churute is located east of Ecuador´s
largest city Guayaquil and is not far from the coast. On the main
road to Naranjal, there is a nondescript posting for the Foundation
that protects this land. Walk to the information center and pay the
admission fee ($3 per person). A guide can escort you through the
reserve for an additional amount. There are many rare, endemic
species of birds, butterflies and most notably, Howler Monkeys.
Several troops live on teh mountainside and the luckiest of
visitors can catch a glimpse of them. When placing the cache, we
only heard their Howls echo across the mountain and we were lucky
enough to smell their musky scent wafting down the slopes.
This is a fantastic place to trek to, just make sure you bring
repellant, drinking water and binos to view the Monkeys!
