Celebrating
10 Years of Geocaching!
When: Sunday May the 2nd 2010 from 7pm until the last
cacher leaves (group photo for “10” icon at the start
as soon after 7 as possible).
Where: In the shadows of the oldest surviving English
cache
(View from Coombe Hill) and near the home of the PM.
Particularly where: Bernard Arms public house. Risborough
Road, Great Kimble, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP17 0XS.
Beaware, the pub will
only be serving food up until 7pm. So if you are planning on
getting food here, please get here well before the event starts.
Please log a "will attend" so that I can pass rough numbers to the
landlord the day before. And if you are coming for food mention
that also and I'll let the landlord know to expect you.
Why: Well it’s all about the history.
On 1st May 2000, the US Government turned off Selective
Availability (SA). In doing so, the Global Positioning System was
opened up to the world, as GPS receivers became accurate to 10
metres or less. Two days later, May 3rd 2000, Dave Ulmer hid the
first stash, just outside Portland, Oregon It was FTF'd the day
after!
The first cache in Europe was
Europe's First and is still in place. Unfortunately, the first
cache in England
England's First is now archived.
What: Following the
picnic by the monument, a chance to either warm up or relax
chatting over a beverage. All ideas of “festive” are
welcome to try and earn the “10” icon. Idea so far is
to wear a t-shirt from the turn of the century. There will be
caching chit-chat and swapping of travel items.
Who: For the cachers on the hill. But more importantly
the event is open to cachers from far and wide! And those in the
area that just can't make the picnic (like me).
Close by: SP's picnic event from 1pm within walking
distance of this one
