Geocache Description:

10 Years of Caching!10 Years of Caching!

- - Celebrating 10 Years of Caching - -
*Near England's oldest surviving cache!

When: Sunday 2nd May 2010 from 1pm to at least 3pm - longer if the weather is ok.

Where: At the highest (260m), best viewpoint in Bucks (Countytop in nearby Wendover Woods is at 267m/N51 46.334 W000 42.648 but has no views) - So cross your fingers for decent weather. In the event of seriously nasty conditions the meet will be relocated to a pub at the bottom of the hill (still within walking distance) around N51 45.338 W000 46.833.

Why: It all started on May 2nd 2000, when the scrambling of the satellite navigation system, known as Selective Availability (SA), was turned off. Everyone was now be able to enjoy greater accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS), which allowed caching to become the popular game it is today.

The first 'stash' was hidden by Dave Ulmer just outside Portland, Oregon on May 3rd 2000. He posted the GPS co-ords online and the stash was located the next day. On May 30th 2000, Matt Stum suggested the name geocaching for this new game... Now, 10 years on, cachers in the UK and around the world are celebrating this first decade of caching. A short history of how geocaching started can be found here.

Who: Cachers from far and wide, plus their kids and dogs! There are dozens of events being held around the world on the first weekend of May 2010 to bring cachers together for this caching milestone. I hope you can come along to this one, to meet fellow cachers, swap geocoins and TBs as well as caching stories and help us celebrate this momentus anniversary at a monument with monumental views! There's also talk of you getting a special 10 Year icon for your profile...

What: So long as the weather plays ball, bring a picnic and enjoy the local caches (of which there are many) and dramatic views as far as Didcot, Ivinghoe and Mentmore. Bring along your kites, frisbees, footballs... Lets make a party out of it!

Very close to this event, which is held at a location with wonderful views across the Vale of Aylesbury, the Chiltern Hills and Chequers -the PMs Country Home- you'll find GC171 by Brad Yuan & Steph Adler (now Alibags) View from Coombe Hill which is England's oldest remaining cache; hidden on January 14th 2001.

Free parking: Can be found at N51 44.900 W000 46.070. This also gives fairly level access to the event. It may be possible to park closer for a steep climb, but I recommend the official car park.

Also coming soon: I love how caching is an excuse to do some random stuff. Take my GC1WD50 - Britain's Fourth Most Remote Event Cache (Jersey), GC22370 - In The Unlikely Event... (Les Minquiers), GC226KJ - The Hunting of the Sark! , GC229XC - Herm is where the heart is!, GC229YY - Guernsey Gathering and GC229YB - All the way to Alderney events for example; all coming in June...

Close by: metal-bijou's evening pub event starts at 7pm within walking distance of this one GC25HCC 10 Years! Chequers, England Double your fun. Make a day out of it!
