Before I came onto the scene computers could not talk to each other. Imagine the biblical story of the Tower of Babel but set in the 1960’s. This is effectively where we were and we would have continued to function this way.
My father is considered to be Robert W. Bemer. As usual IBM tried to wipe me out, but I won through. First used by AT & T in their teleprinters (seven-bit code) in 1963 I was then used in 1981 in personal computers by of all companies, IBM. Technology makes for strange bedfellows at times.
I have undergone many variations over the years but I am still recognisable back at my most basic form.
