This is an example of how we just don’t know what is right under our noses. We have been coming to this paradise since 1981 and we never knew about Harry. We used to stay at a nearby apartment block just a few hundred metres from here and if we had explored the area properly at that time we would have met him in person.
Some years ago Harry and Jean Thompson moved from Warren NSW and took up residence in their caravan at Shelly Beach – where they decided to stay - permanently!! Harry must have been quite a rugged character and soon became a local identity because eventually he became known as the unofficial Mayor and caretaker of Shelly Beach. After Harry's death in 2001 public artworks were commissioned as a memorial to Harry. The artworks are situated at Harry's Corner on the northern end of the car park at Shelly Beach overlooking the cove and surfing beach.
Directly adjacent to where Harry and Jean's caravan once stood now stands a caravan style picnic shelter. Also featured at Harry's Corner is a monument and a small spiral stone pathway inscribed with reminiscences of Harry. Sculptured timber park furniture created as part of the art project Memories of Harry is featured at both Harry's Corner and Harry's Lookout. There is a walking track nearby leading up to Harry's Lookout on the headland..
