Happy 10th Geocachers!
2pm at the park in Dunsandel.
Please remember your HATS
An informal gathering for everyone to come along swap stories, put
faces to caching names, and catch up with old friends and new.
Bring along a party hat for the photos to qualify this as a 10th
anniversary event.
Technically this is 10 years since Selective Availability being
turned off rather than the
first cache was placed 3rd May 2000. You can read more about
that cache and how this site got started here.
As to us here in New Zealand we were very fast in taking up this
new 'game'. In fact of the first 100 geocaches placed worldwide 5
of them were here in New Zealand.

Still active! nz etrex became a member of this site in
September of 2000 and is now living in London and still finds
caches when time permits |
The listings for these caches were copied over from the original
site when this one was created. Some of the caches have been linked
up to the correct placers accounts some are still linked to
accounts of Geocaching.com staff member account who was responsible
for coping them over and so keeping the history of this sport
intact.
Why here? Well, it's the closest site to my cache
GC4A Who was Bob C? placed in memory of the South Islands first
cache. It too got washed away in a flood, hopefully the replacement
is well enough weighed down to survive.
Update We have
had some prizes donated by a New Zealand company that is an
official groundspeak distributor. Remember: to make this a special '10 Year' event, we need to
meet the following:
At least 10 people must attend the event.
A video or picture must be taken at the event.
At least 10 attendees must be in the video/photo along with a
legible sign showing the event coordinates and location name.
The people in the video or photo should be festive.
Be inventive! But please keep it family
friendly.
Weather is forcast to be sunny :-)
