Kit Karson Kache
About this location:
Located just off Carson Pass (elevation 8,573 feet) along
Highway 88, which is about 25 miles southeast by road from South
Lake Tahoe, and 60 miles by road from the city of
Jackson.
This is an
easy-to-get-to virtual cache in the historical area at Carson Pass,
named after the famous Kit Carson. Parking is $3 from May 31 to
October 31, and then goes up to $5 for a sno-park fee from November
1 to May 30.
This area has some
of the most scenic terrain. Frog Lake, Winnemucca Lake, Round Top
Lake and the spectacular Round Top Peak can all be accessed by the
trailhead at the parking lot. During winter and summer this area
attracts all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts.
When you get to
the virtual cache site you will find something not naturally
occurring there and conspicuously large. It is the remnants of a
human made structure.
Many geocachers ask
how this structure came to be. Unfortunately, the local history
museum curator and the forest service experts do not have any exact
information on its origin or purpose. The best answers given were
that it may be related to the nearby mining sites or that it was
functional for the early travelers crossing Carson
Pass.
Originally, the
idea was to name this cache: "TRY
PLUNDERING THIS!" because the last two physical caches
placed in this area were plundered--both within a month. This time
there is no way someone can plunder it!
To verify you have found the
cache:
To verify that you have found the cache site, give me a
general (not too general!) description of what you find. You may
also post a photo of structure that is there on your
log.
Cache adopted and updated in March 2008 by
SNSpencer.
The original owner of this cache is no longer an active player in
the game and was gracious enough to allow me to take over the
maintenance of this hide. I have adopted five vista area
Virtual Caches around the perimeter of Lake Tahoe and three in the
Carson Pass/Kirkwood area. Loving Lake Tahoe and other
adjacent areas as he did, the original creator,
TahoeBerne, chose these scenic areas to have you
stop, look, and breathe in the beauty. I wholeheartedly agree
with his opinion of these areas and his reasons for wanting to
share them with you.
Although a "hidden" cache may be more challenging to locate,
TahoeBerne had the following reasons for making
these Virtual Caches:
-
Many Traditional hidden caches are
stolen.
-
You can visit them in all four seasons, pending
any road closures due to snow, which are only temporary
anyway.
-
They are easier to find, if that is your
desire.
-
They all are located in what I feel are the most
scenic locations.
