Cairnsmore of Carsphairn is the highest of the three Cairnsmore
summits at 797m - the others being Cairnsmore of Dee and Cairnsmore
of Fleet.
There are various routes to the summit but we suggest you start
from Knockgray Farm. There is limited parking at N 55 12.670 W 004
15.054. Head in an easterly direction along the B729 until you head
northeast up the track which goes to Knockgray. After 0.5km, near
the farm steading, go through a large gate and head north up the
rough road. Follow this road for almost 2km then take the branch
which heads north east. After a short distance you will cross the
Benloch Burn and immediately pick up a quad track which will guide
you over a wet section in a northerly direction to the shoulder
between Dunool and Black Shoulder.
Upon reaching the shoulder head northeast past a small lochan
before picking up a dyke with a path adjacent. This path can be
followed to the summit.
Return via the same route or alternatively continue on a
circular route by heading southwest beside a dyke until you pick up
the road which leads to the Green Well of Scotland and return to
your car via the public road.
This is a real mountain challenge and you are advised to wear
appropriate clothing and footwear. Make sure you also have enough
food for a walk of around 4-5 hours.
Make sure you take a look at the spoiler picture before you
leave - we wouldn't like you to walk all this way and not find
it!
You are looking for a small lock-n-lock box with room for swaps
and TB's etc. Please make sure you replace it carefully to avoid
detection by muggles
