Geocache Description:

A series of caches around the area of Thornton Heights following a section of the Bronte Way before looping around through the historic hamlets around the village of Thornton. This can be a circular walk of around 3 miles or the caches can be done individually.

At the time of the Brontes' residence (from 1815 to 1820), Thornton was still a very small hamlet. Even by the standards of the day, Thornton was a very Puritanical community, and an unusual number of the names of nearby hamlets are of biblical origin (e.g. "Jericho", "Jerusalem", "Egypt", and the apocalytically named "World's End" - to list but a few). The Puritan influence is also reflected in the recorded Christian names of many of the inhabitants of the time: "Meshach", "Ezra" and "Cain" being popular recorded names for boys; "Kezia", "Tabitha" and "Abigail" being popular popular recorded names for girls. Indeed, the founder of the old church, a Reverend Caleb Kemp boasted that he had "sowed an amount of Puritan seed, the fruit of which was seen for many days..." (whatever that means !)

From Thornton Heights - I'll Pack A Bag, follow the footpath across Upper Heights Road and through the field to Lower Heights Road. Then turn left and then right by the Rock & Heifer down Egypt Road. Take the footpath by the row of cottages (or just follow the road down if too overgrown in the warmer months) and then the footpath takes you past the last remnants of the Walls of Jericho, a relic of the quarrying history of this area. Follow the footpath sign towards Long Lane.

You are looking for a micro, near, but not in a wall.

If you are doing the circular walk, we suggest doing the caches in the following order:

GC1Q3E4 Thornton Heights - Step Through The Cemetery

GC1Q3N4 Thornton Heights – Top O’ The Hill

GC1Q3NN Thornton Heights – I’ll Pack A Bag

GC1Q5YM Thornton Heights – Walls Of Jericho

GC1Q62V Thornton Heights – World’s End

GC1Q637 Thornton Heights – End of the World

GC1Q63M Thornton Heights – Step Up To Spring
