Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden at the former fire lookout site on Arbuckle Mtn, 5827', in the Umatilla National Forest.

Enjoy a nice stroll to the minor south summit of Arbuckle. The access road is slowly being taken over by nature, but the track is still easily walkable. You'll be hoofing it about 8/10 of a mile with an elevation gain of about 200'. Parking coordinates are listed below.

Established with a crows nest in the 1920s, followed by a 24' pole platform in 1930, a 67' wooden L-4 tower, built in 1946, was last staffed in 1974 and removed in 1976. Only the concrete pillars remain.

Take the 170 spur north off the Western Route Forest Road 53 between Ukiah and Heppner. This is a slow-going, rough, dusty, rocky, bumpy, sometimes muddy 1.9 miles from pavement to parking. You can drive here from late May through the first decent snowstorm in the Fall. The Western Route is not plowed in the winter.

You're seeking a camo-painted nut jar.
