An ammo can near the site of the old Camp Reposo along the Big Trees trail. One of my favorite groves in Marin.
Reposo was the original name for Big Trees Camp, which once held a hunting lease on thousands of acres of water district land. The lease was canceled in 1971 after there was growing concern about the camp and its policies. Today, you will find a beautiful redwood grove, with towering trees that were never logged, a seasonal stream, and a nice meadow.
The first time I came here, I took the Lily Gulch trail from the Dutchman's Rock to Bathtub Gap. From there, take the Nail Trail to the camp. According to Barry Spitz, the gap is named for a bathtub nestled in the area -- if you see it please post the coordinates.
Most people probably come from the Big Trees fire road shortly before the Pipeline cache. The trail is marked by a Carson Watershed informational sign. It is an easy bike ride to this trail and a short walk from there. If you continue up the path, it is a very nice hike to Carson Falls.
I won the container as a prize for finding TH2. While in the area, recovering from an overconfident bike ride, I had a vision that the cache should be placed here, in keeping with TH2's location. I had decent gpsr reception, but it is hidden under large trees. You will know you are getting close when you see a large burnt redwood tree near the creek.
The cache is not in the center of the tree, but follow the fallen one. Please replace it carefully, exactly as you found it. And if you come up here when the trails are wet, be sure to clean/disinfect your shoes -- there are a number of bays along the trail that act as carriers for sudden oak death. The oak you save may be my own.
