When QWERTY told me of a shop that used to exist on the corner of Racine and Main, I new instantly what my next LW cache was going to be. I have been amazed as a geocacher to discover so many great custom coin creations and have come to realize how avid some of our geocoin enthusiasts are about their hobby. I wondered how many more coin and stamp enthusiasts were out there and I was utterly amazed to discover the scope of what is collectible in the eyes of an Exonumist - collectors of tokens, medals, buttons, badges, ribbons and other small collectibles.
There was a time when regional and local events were remembered with ribbons and coins, much like our festivals are today with buttons and bumper stickers, and it is fascinating and fun to take a step back in time and envision people wearing these pins with pride.
The use of public transportation was another element of daily turn-of-the-century life, an essential way for most people to get from place to place, especially if they didn't have one of them newfangled automobiles. Today we swipe cards or drop quarters into the Fare Box, but back then they used transportation system specific tokens, identified by the Rail or the City, and good for a single ride.
As a reward for finding this cache, you will be allowed to take ONE antique transportation token with you as a memento of this series. PLEASE take just one.
MENASHA: Named after the Indian word Menashay meaning “settlement on the island,” along with its sister city Neenah meaning “clear water” they are collectively also taken to mean "Laughing Waters" for the sounds that emanated from the twin falls on either side of the island.
This series will not only introduce you to the city of Menasha, but also give you some significant historical knowledge about this town which many drive through just to get from the north side of the Valley to the south. So, the next time you pass through town, you might want to take a little time to look around and appreciate its many unique offerings and establishments.

It is our hope that after doing the series you will be inclined to stop for a bit the next time you drive through town and appreciate what a unique little community it has been and continues to be by re-inventing itself.
