In The Unlikely Event... (Les Minquiers) Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Simply Paul: The time has come to wave this amazing event goodbye. Thanks again to everyone who was able to make it (tough break, that hole in the other boat!) and I'm sure, like me, it'll be vivid in your memories for a long time to come. Thanks also to the watchers- I will upload some photos with a note when I get a chance. I don't know how I manage to keep so busy, yet I do..!

Geocache Description:

Be warned: This one WILL be hard to get to...!
When: 2pm - Sunday 20th June 2010 (Weather permitting).
Where: Les Minquiers islands (aka The Minkies), English Channel.
Why: Because it's there! Except at high tide!
Who: Those who take their extreme caching seriously.
How to get there: That's up to you, but an Internet search will produce some suggestions.

The Union flag fluttering above Maitresse Ile, marking this as a British extreme. Having started organising 'Extreme Cache Events' in 2007 (if we ignore my Death or Glory! event to climb Scafell Pike -England's highest- in 2006 for a moment) with a trip to St Kilda off the Outer Hebrides (UK's most westerly), following it up by 'going all soft' with St Agnes in the Isles of Scilly (UK's most southerly) in 2008 and semi-hardcore in summer 2009 on Unst in the Shetlands (UK's most northerly) for 2010 I wanted to do something a bit more special. And that doesn't mean a trip to Lowestoft!

The Location: Maitresse Ile is the main island of the Les Minquiers group of rocks approx. 9 miles south of Jersey in the English Channel. As such, it's the most southerly point in Britain (The Channel Isles are a Crown Protectorate, not part of the UK).

The Event: Once everyone expected to attend has arrived, or at 2pm if that's sooner, we'll find a sheltered spot to talk caching and swap coins and TBs to ensure this unusual event complies with Groundspeak event listing requirements. I also intend to get permission to leave a cache, with a 'local' to maintain it for me, on the island...

Also Available: I'll also be holding 'Britain's Fourth Most Remote Event Cache (Jersey)' -GC1WD50 - meet on a tidal off the southeast tip of Jersey for those who like their extremes not too extreme; Rockall is further west than St Kilda, Muckle Flugga is further north than Unst etc. but like them, no one lives on Maitresse Ile. With that more accessible option, this event would be a meet for the ultra committed only!

All my Channel Island events in date order:
Sunday, June 13th - GC1WD50 Britain's Fourth Most Remote Event Cache (Jersey)
Sunday, June 20th - GC22370 In The Unlikely Event... (Les Minquiers) - this one
Friday, June 25th - GC226KJ The Hunting of the Sark!
Saturday, June 26th - GC229XC Herm is where the heart is!
Sunday, June 27th - GC229YY Guernsey Gathering
Monday, June 28th - GC229YB All the way to Alderney

There's a thread about these events on the UK forum

Additional Hints (Decrypt)

[At low tide something like 100 squ. miles of rocks are exposed. At high tide, it's around 0.1 squ. miles. The event is to be held on the dry bit, before global warming gets it. Aim for the dry bit!]
