Geocache Description:

Monument to soldiers of Austrian Empire, who fought in the Napoleonic Wars in Tarvisio. There were three major battles in the year 1793, 1809 and 1813 near and around Tarvisio.

The most famous battles were fought in May 1809 at fort Herman, Predil (visit link) and at fort Hensel, Malborghto (visit link) . They were considered Austrian Thermopylae. There were around 900 soldiers in both forts and only a fraction survived, the rest were killed. The forts in that time were built out of mud and wood. The ones you can see today were built around 1880.

More info on the battles at wikipedia (visit link) .

The cache is hidden in the woods south, south-east of the monument. DO NOT CLIMBE over the fence on the west and southwest side of the monument or you’ll fall in Slizza Canyon.

Please be careful at placing the cache back and hide it well again! The logbook is inside a 35mm film box.
