Geocache Description:

A cache in memory of a great Australian!

TEMPORARY NOTE .... ... currently there is intense construction work so perhaps not best during working hours. The cache is located near the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre, East Melbourne. Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. When she was in Penola she met Julian Tenison Woods and together they opened the first St Joseph's School in 1866. Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph to continue this work. Over the many following years, the number of Sisters grew as did their schools. Schools were opened as the needs arose: in country towns, mining towns, cities. The Sisters also became involved in other areas of need including setting up a refuge for women in need and orphanages for children, visiting prisons and working with the sick. The Melbourne Providence as a place for destitute women. It opened in 1891 at 43-45 Latrobe Street with a convent, refuge for women and children’s night school. Soup, food and clothes were distributed with volunteer help. Mary bought land in Albert Street, East Melbourne in 1901 for the erection of a new Providence, providing a home for women and children. This doubled as a Province Centre until 1910. An adjoining two storey residence, purchased and opened in 1920, later became a hostel for country girls. Today the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre occupies the Providence site. The Mary MacKillop Museum tells the story of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, her life and work and the work of the Sisters of St Joseph. It also includes a beautiful chapel in which Mary MacKillop prayed. Mary MacKilop's famous saying was "Never see a need without doing something about it. Well..... there was a need, a geochache in her honour, and something has been done about it. This is one of many caches placed in significant locations of her story. Mary died on August 8th, 1909. She was declared Australia’s first Saint in 2012. Thank you to rmalavisi who lives in Melbourne and will attend to maintenance etc for the cache.
