Geocache Description:

NCSSM Multi-cache Series Puzzle #1

This is one of a series of puzzle caches dedicated to the North Carolina School of Science and Math located in Durham, NC. There are eleven preliminary caches and a Final Cache. Each represents a class a student at the NCSSM may take, and a potential question that may (or may not) appear on a test given at that school. Links to all twelve caches can be found at the bottom of this listing. For each preliminary cache you find, you will earn access to a jigsaw puzzle piece which will be used to help solve the final. Note that each preliminary cache can be found independently, however you will need to find all of them in order to solve the final. When you put the jigsaw pieces together, clues on the Final Cache page will help you find the last cache.

NOTE: The Cache is NOT at the Above Coordinates!

None of the caches are on school grounds but are located within 2 miles of the above location. Some of the caches are located on park property and others on public property. Please do not trespass on private property when accessing any of the caches. Note that you may need tweezers to obtain the logs for a number of these caches.

Puzzle For The Geocache Coordinates: Geography

Every student should be well versed in geography, and what better place to learn than here at home! To find this cache, you're going to have to do some searching. The map below is of the North Carolina School of Science and Math grounds and its surrounding area. A grid is covering the map which shows the latitude and longitude of the location. All you need to do is select the Geocheck link below and start entering coordinates until you find the cache location - just like Battleship.

Simple, right?

Well, almost. Here are some rules to guide you:

Longitude Rules:
- The cache is located on a longitude between N 36 00.833 and N 36 01.533.
- The longitude grid lines on the map increment by tenth and hundredth of a second. That means you can limit your search between the longitude boundaries by just changing 'x.xx' in N 36 0x.xx3, where x.xx is in the boundary set 0.83 ≤ x.xx ≤ 1.53
Latitude Rules:
- The cache is located on a latitude between W 078 55.146 and W 078 55.796.
- The latitude grid lines on the map increment by tenth and hundredth of a second. That means you can limit your search between the latitude boundaries by just changing 'yy' in W 078 55.yy6, where yy is in the boundary set 14 ≤ yy ≤ 79
The cache is located on one of the crossed grid lines. As such, if you tried every possible cross point, you could have potentially over 4,600 attempts before you find the right spot. In the interest of keeping your sanity intact, and also to ensure that I am not banned from future geocache events, I will give you some hints up front:
- The cache is not located in any house nor on private property.
- Be aware that the majority of the property between the streets is private property, so don't waste your time in someone's house.
- The cache is not located on - or under - any street.
- The cache is not located on the NCSSM school grounds.
- Potential locations for the cache include parks, side walks, and parking lots.
- Five more specific hints will be provided by GeoCheck as you enter coordinates - similar to Battleship 'hits' - so be sure to pay attention!
