Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden in Breakheart Reservation, by the summit of Eagle Rock. Breakheart is open from dawn to dusk. It's not advisable to seek this cache when there's rain or snow; parts of the trail are rocky/all rock and steep, as well as the cache location itself.

Our first Eagle Rock cache didn't work out as we had to keep replacing an ammo box. Our second Eagle Rock cache was a micro and could be tricky to find, yet non-cachers would manage to muggle it. This cache is a good compromise--it has enough room to hold small trades and it shouldn't be too hard to find, but the hide location will hopefully not be discovered too easily by muggles. Even so, please try to be sure you're not seen by anyone when you go for the grab or when re-hiding the cache.

Please bring your own pen to sign the log and be sure to snap the lid tightly back onto the container before you put the cache back where it was and replace the camo. Also, as with any cache, please do not leave any type of food, liquids, or meltable items in the cache, and please try to shield the cache contents from any precipitation. Thank you! :)

Trackables: If you find and take a trackable (travel bug, geocoin), please remember to log the trackable at least two times - first when you take it from a cache, and then again when you place it in another cache. See this page if you need help.

Have fun!

Maps of Breakheart are sometimes available at both the Saugus and Wakefield entrances, but the map boxes are often empty. You can, however, print a map (look for the PDF file) from the Friends of Breakheart Reservation website, linked as the "related web page" near the top of this page. Or, for a direct link to the map referenced, click here.

This is the route we take to get to Eagle Rock: Park in one of the Breakheart-designated spaces in the lot at the vocational school in Wakefield. Walk to the gate and go immediately left on the paved road, following it until there's a bit of a clearing on the right as you get close to Pearce Lake (which you can't see yet). Turn right into the clearing. A trail (which may not be noticeable because it starts in a clearing) quickly leads to an edge of Pearce Lake where there's a little wooden bridge and then a more defined trail. Follow that and you'll come to a fork in the trail with a sign indicating Eagle Rock Trail one way and Pearce Lake Trail the other way. Eagle Rock Trail is the way to go. When you are almost up to the top of Eagle Rock, your GPSr may point you in the direction of a small side trail which is somewhat overgrown. You can avoid the overgrowth by just going straight ahead to the top of Eagle Rock and getting to the cache from there. It is also possible to get to Eagle Rock other ways, as you can see on the map.
