Once parked and afoot, there is some minor rock scrambling required
in negotiating the course. You don’t need ropes or climbing gear,
but you may have to use your hands as well as feet in a few places.
Use your best tick repellent in the spring, and watch out for the
occasional rattlesnake. Use common sense and reasonable caution if
you pursue this Geocache.
In addition to your GPS, you will need a compass and understand
how to use it to complete the course. Additional information that
you need to successfully pursue this Geocache is provided here:
All letterboxes are capped PVC tubes 12 inches long. The
directions to the next letterbox are contained inside these pipes.
The final Cache is located in an Ammo can. UTM coordinates and
distances are based on the following GPS settings.
Position Format = UTM/UPS
Map Datum = NAD27 CONUS
Units = Metric
This is a hybrid letterbox cache. You will be given two GPS
co-ordinates, one for where to park (above) and one for where to
start. Each of the 7 locations after the starting point will give
you a compass bearing and a distance in meters to the next
letterbox. The last is the actual Geocache.
The total distance of this letterbox-guided hike is
approximately 2 kilometers. As well as bearing and distance, each
letterbox will provide you with the name of the next point. The
easiest example of this would be a letterbox called “Point”. You
will get a magnetic bearing and distance to the “Point” letterbox.
Once you line up your compass on the magnetic bearing specified,
you may see a rock outcropping that has a point on top, and nothing
else around it. It’s a good bet that is your location. Some are
obvious and will make you feel confident. Others are cryptic or
hard to figure out or may not be visible during part of the hike to
that point. You will need to be able to walk this compass bearing
and get your distance in meters from your last point to find the
right place.
We have taken every possible care to provide you with accurate
measurements, but you will likely still have to stop, explore, and
ask yourself where it might be hidden. We used averaging techniques
with the GPS set to meters. You should be prepared to spend half a
day and enjoy a picnic in the area. Although there is a final
Geocache with log and standard treasures, the real treasure in this
is completing the course and enjoying the Hoodoo’s.
For those who have done this cache before, I
have moved the final cache location to better reflect the clue and
the rest of the course.
After you have parked at the above Lat Lon coordinates, proceed
to the UTM coordinates starting point at:
11 T 0520127E 4793099N
This is the location of the first of eight letterboxes. Open the
tube, read the directions, and good luck.
We would greatly appreciate your feedback, and would like to
hear whether you’d be interested in more hybrid letterbox caches
like this, the same or harder. Please return here and post your
comments, complaints, and suggestions.
