Note:
It was discovered in November of 2006, that the giant cactus had
fallen. As Team Dodge Podge noted at that time: because nearly all
cachers who found it did so without actually using the shadow. So
it's still a viable puzzle and the information on the cache page
can still be used to locate it.
And as proof that this statement is correct, the cache has been
solved, and located several times since.
This cache was placed at 18:15 on May 7. This is the sister
cache to
Saguaro Sundial Sunrise. The cache is hidden where the end
of the shadow of a saguaro cactus we call "Skyscraper" fell at that
time. To find the cache, you have to deduce where the shadow was at
that time.
Skyscraper is no ordinary cactus. This is perhaps the tallest
saguaro there is. It is at least twice as tall as all the cacti
around it. I estimate it at least 55 feet tall.
This is Sweet Pea standing next to it. She is 5' 5" tall, so you
can get an idea of the size of this amazing plant. The saguaro to
the left of the pic is about a normal size example.
Do not underestimate how long this plant's shadow can be at 6:00
pm. Realize that at other times, and on other dates, the shadow
will be somewhere else, so extrapolate your data from there!
This cache is located on State Trust Land. The State Land
Department has no problem with this activity, but they ask that
participants know the following: A Recreation Permit is required to
legally access State Trust Land. These permits are easily obtained
by phoning (602) 364-ASLD. Or click
here to download the form.
Watch out for no-legged creatures. Cache is well-camouflaged but in
plain sight. Log page only and BYOP.
If you go out there, you will be near the
Pile of Pictures cache, and not too far from
High Flight as well. If your cardio is up to it,
Newman Peak cache is in that area as well.
