Scared of heights? Don't look down! This cache is on the side of an overhanging cliff

Before you go driving to find this cache, know this:

  • This cache is on the side of an overhanging cliff
  • It is impossible to climb up to the cache from below.
  • It is impossible to climb down to the cache from above.
  • YOU WILL NEED RAPPELLING EQUIPMENT TO RETRIEVE THIS CACHE!!

This cache is rated 5 for terrain and it means it.

To log this cache, you will need rock climbing/rappelling gear, and know how to use it!

You should park at the posted parking waypoint : N 42° 48.806 W 076° 20.481.

From there you can either take the trail to the left, or walk along the road. I recommend taking the trail. When the trail branches off, make sure to take the high road, not the low road. You don't want to walk down into the ravine just yet, we will be taking the fun way down! When you get to the posted coordinates, you will be standing directly over the cache, but you can't get at it while your feet are firmly on the ground!

Cache is an ammo can hidden in a niche in the rock wall and secured with some cable to prevent it from falling. You will have to choose a spot at the top of the cliff and rappell down the cliff face searching for the cache!

To attempt this cache you will need at a minimum:

  • Rock climbing or rapelling gear.
    • A good static line that is at least 100 feet long.
    • A rappel device, preferably one that allows you to stop for extended periods.
    • Some type of ascender like a petzl ascension would be helpful as well
    • Copious amount of extra biners, webbing, and such with which to make anchors of the various trees
  • Ability to use the same
  • A caching partner
  • Guts

I offer my services as a caching partner and ropes expert to anyone who feels that they want to attempt this cache. I will bring everything we need, you bring the guts! I will not lead you to the cache, but I will let you use my gear, make sure everything is set up properly, instruct you on safe proceedure, and accompany you on the descent from a second rope. I have talked many a newcomer through rapelling over the edge of many cliffs, buildings and towers, and guided them safely to the ground, including my wife on our first date and the day we were engaged! Anyone who wants to attempt this cache but doesn't have the confidence, skills, equipment or knowledge should contact me. We can make a trip of it, and I can guarantee an experience you will never forget!

For the sake of clarity:

  • This cache is on the side of an overhanging cliff
  • It is impossible to climb up to the cache from below.
  • It is impossible to climb down to the cache from above.
  • YOU WILL NEED RAPPELLING EQUIPMENT TO RETRIEVE THIS CACHE!!
  • If you are at the cache site and and think that you have found this cache, LOOK DOWN. If you don't see this:

You have not found this cache!

I almost forgot. There is a code inside the cache called the "fear code". There will be a different fear code inside each cache in BigWhiteTruck's Phobia Series Geocaches. Once all the phobia caches are placed, there will be a final cache for the most brave geocachers to find. You will need the fear code from every cache in the Phobia Series to find the final cache!

Found with Bluegirl and about 15 other geocachers. The most awsome single cache I have done to date. This is definetly on the top of the Bucket List and a must do geocache. This was Bluegirls 1000th geocache and she was very excited about it and did an awsome job of completing it. Way to go Honey! I was glad i was with her to do her 1000th geocache and this one to boot.

A BIG thanks to Novac for organizing and BWT and his brother for all of their patience in getting us all down the cliff to the cache and safely to the ground. THANK YOU!

Woo-Hoo! an unforgettable 1000th geocache. Many thanks to Novac for organizing the day, and much appreciation to BWT and his brother for their excellent coaching, supervision, and patience. I really am scared of heights, but I also like a challange, and I really had fun rappelling to the cache and then down to the bottom. We live nearly 250 miles from here, but picked this as my milestone cache, and I'm so glad we did. I hope BWT has recovered from his multiple hikes out of the ravine after helping everyone! Thank you for making it such a safe and fun day. TNLNSL.

WOW! There are simply NOT enough superlatives for the experience we had at this amazing cache and for those who made the experience possible; Novac, for gathering our group together and taking care of all the details, RicochetInfinity for charming all of us; Singer21 for his excellent training sessions and for expertly handling/managing all of the gear involved; and especially BigWhiteTruck, for being the creator of this once-in-a-lifetime, absolutely, incredibly, amazingly exciting experience that pushed our limits, tested our courage, and empowered us to do something that we NEVER would have even thought about doing if it hadn't been for him and this particular cache, and also for his generosity in giving up a beautiful summer Saturday in order to do this for us. His patience and care in instructing us - one at time time and fifteen or sixteen times total - rappelling down the cliff while patiently instructing/reassuring each of us, then running back up to the top of the cliff to do the whole thing all over again and again and again and again. This cache is definately the best and most unique cache we've done and one that we'll remember always. Thanks again to all who made it possible.

Not only did I rappel down to the cache, but I did it with my 7-year-old son, RicochetInfinity. We had a great time, and RI didn't have any fear or nerves the entire time!
On the training area, I found out that rappelling is much easier and much more under my control than I was anticipating. On the actual cliff, leaning back and trusting the equipment is definitely the hardest part -- especially since I didn't want to be the guy that the helicopter would have to fly in to rescue! But happily, BWT makes everything quite safe and I had no troubles at all.
The entire day, I was only aware of 3 injuries, and none of them were related to rappelling in any way!?! One skinned elbow (thanks to tricky rocks), one scratched arm (thanks to a prickly tree), and one aching palm (thanks to a slippery creek).
Arrived on site at 8:00...6.5 hours and 15 rappellers later, we were all feeling great about the day.
Most of us met up afterward for a bite to eat at Johnny Angels in Skaneateles. A neat little diner: OK food, but great company.
An immense amount of gratitude goes out to BigWhiteTruck for the support and instruction on the way down. Thanks to Singer202 for the training to get us all ready for the "real" thing. And thanks to both for the cache and the amount of time invested in helping us have a safe, awesome day!
Amazing, amazing experience that I will never forget! It will be something I will cherish with my son forever.

Well where does one start when logging in their favorite cache yet? I ramped up my caching a while back to make this cache number 1000. But the caches flew by and now I'm way over that magical number while this cache was truly magical in and of itself. Met all the other cachers at the falls and had a great time talking and watching as each person took their turn at going over the falls. Got to meet other cachers we had only met through the web site. What I fine time had by all.Geolobo while returning with Bluegirl from a nearby Falls cache found an unpublished hidden ammo box. He brought it back for all to look at and we read the few logs inside. Several of us signed the log and Geolobo returned it to its hiding spot.
While waiting I took a bunch of pictures from all over the falls area which I'm posting a few of. I grabbed a couple of the geocoins that had sat here for too long to move on.
I can't rethank Rich enough for his work and help in letting me cache this find. One last note as I was hanging over the ledge I turned to Rich and said "I hate you man and I love you thanks for this moment".
Yes I still have my fear of heights but this was a blast.
Once again thanks to Rich and Steve for all their work.
