BT Hike Event - Niagara Section: Part 1 Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

res2100: Thanks everyone for attending. We had a record # of people out for this hike (65 in total) and more people finished this hike than all previous 4 hikes combined.

I really like many of the unique manmade features that we saw along the trail. I didn't enjoy several of the snake incidents that we had (it's always when we were alone on the trail). We even saw a wolf at the edge of a pond that day. And I even got a sunburn on my face, as did my son too. I enjoyed making new friends along the trail and as well as hiking with those of you who I already know. I am proud of my son for making it to the end. Thanks everyone for attending and for all the great pictures that were posted on the event page.

Next hike is just a couple weeks away (Saturday, May 2nd) where we will continue where we left off. It's 22km long. And then the final 2 hikes of the Niagara section will be in the September and October. I have those event pages ready and will post them in the summer.
I also updated the list of scheduled hikes to remove one of the Iroquoia section hikes from 6 to 5, so as to average them to about 25km each (22.2 to 29.6 km in length) and bump up the first of the Blue Mountains hikes to the Spring of 2011. Rest of the hikes remain unchanged for now, but as we get closer to the last 3 sections of the Bruce Trail in a few years, I will probably revise them too to make them a bit longer, as under 20km just seems too short. Anyone want to do the whole 67.2km of the Blue Mountains section in 1 day? Nevermind. lol.

After 5 hikes, we have now hiked a total of 199.5km and are 22.2% done the Bruce Trail.

Hope to see many of you at the next hike.

Geocache Description:

Event is on
Good Friday

Goal: To hike the first 22.8km of the Niagara section of the Bruce Trail. The Niagara section is a total of 79.5km in length.

After 4 successful Bruce Trail hikes, we plan to do the Niagara section. The total distance of the Niagara section is 79.5km long and we plan to hike this section in 4 parts.

For future hikes, see the schedule linked at the end of the listing. We plan on doing about 4 hikes a year in order to complete my goal of finishing the entire Bruce Trail on my 50th birthday.

I estimate that the entire hike will take about 6.5 hours to complete, so we should be done around 4:00pm. This is at a moderate 3.5km\h pace.

If you can't make the entire hike, maybe join us for part of it atleast. You can always drop out along the way if you feel it's too difficult or too long.

Meet at 9:00am at the posted coordinates, which is at the southern Bruce Trail terminus cairn located at the eastern end of Queenston Heights Park. We plan to start hiking around 9:15-9:30am.

Destination is the 22.8km mark of the Niagara section of the Bruce Trail which is near the Merritt Trail parking area on the north side of Glendale Avenue. (N43 08.158 W79 13.015)

Parking: There should be more than enough parking at both the beginning and end points of the hike. Hopefully some people will park at the end and carpool back to the starting point both before and after the hike. I plan on parking at the end so I will need a ride to the beginning before the hike.

It might be wise to stash some supplies at certain locations of your choice along the trail so that you don't have to carry everything with you.

What you should bring: Water and other drinks. Food for lunch, dinner and snacks. GPS. Maps. Camera. Cell Phone. First Aid Kit. Advil/Tylenol.

Track our progress as we hike the trail. Don't feel up for the hike, then join us by watching our progress as we go along. Screen will update every couple minutes, but our progress will be updated every hour or so. Thanks to northerpenguin for setting this up.

Badges: Those of us that complete this hike along with the other 3 planned hikes in the Niagara section will qualify for the Niagara End To End badge for hiking the entire Niagara Section of the Bruce Trail. For more information and to obtain a badge, see this Niagara Bruce Trail Club link.
