[EN] This GeoGem is not true Topaz! Keep me moving from cache to cache!

[CZ] Tenhle GeoGem není opravdový Topaz! Pomozte mi cestovat z keše do keše!

[EN] Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine with the chemical formula Al2SiO4(F,OH)2. Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and its crystals are mostly prismatic terminated by pyramidal and other faces. Pure topaz is colorless and transparent but is usually tinted by impurities; typical topaz is wine, yellow, pale gray or reddish-orange, blue and brown coloring. Coloring can also be made white, pale green, blue, gold, pink (rare), reddish-yellow or opaque to transparent/translucent. Imperial topaz is yellow, pink (rare, if natural) or pink-orange. Brazilian Imperial Topaz can often have a bright yellow to deep golden brown hue, sometimes even violet. Many brown or pale topazes are treated to make them bright yellow, gold, pink or violet colored. Some imperial topaz stones can fade on exposure to sunlight for an extended period of time.

Sorry for holding the geogem for a bit, but we knew the perfect place for it. We placed it near in a Member's only Geocache near the Sterling Hill Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey. http://sterlinghillminingmuseum.org/

This area is know worldwide for its fluorescent minerals - Willemite, Franklinite, and Hardystonite.

Not far from Ogdensburg is Andover, which is known for the Andover Iron Mine, which was opened sometime before 1763, prior to the American Revolutionary War.

I have some pictures, and will post them later today.

  • Sterling Hill Mining Museum Before we put the GeoGem in the cache, it went on a tour of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum.
  • Our Mine Tour Guide Here is our tour guide Joe, a retired miner who worked at the mine when it was still open.
  • Levels of the mine This picture is of the Bells chart for the hoist that took the miners up and down the mine shaft. You can see that the lowest level for the miners was 1850 feet.
  • Inside the mine The mine was mainly a zinc mine. Here is a link for the information about the museum and the mine. http://sterlinghillminingmuseum.org/
  • A sample of the Fluorescent minerals Under UV light, you can see the Willemite, Calcite, and Fluorite glow.
  • Temporary stop for GeoGem Hopefully, this cache will be only a temporary stop as the GeoGem moves on.
  • What better location? What better location for a GeoGem than where this Members only cache is hidden? Thanks again to Treequest for a great Cache location.

We found the gem close to the Superstition Mountains in Apache Junction, AZ. The Superstition Mountains are known for the lost Dutchman's gold mine. The Weaver's Needle is a prominent geological landmark of the mountains.
