About This Item

Circumnavigation Magellan/Elcano

Ferdinand Magellan, a sailor and naval officer, was elected by the King Charles I of Spain to search for a secure westward route to the "Spice Islands“ (today's Maluku Islands).

He started on 10 August 1519 with a fleet of five vessels: Trinidad, which he commanded himself, San Antonio, Conceptión, Victoria and Santiago. He had a whole of a crew of 237 men.

He headed south through the Atlantic Ocean to Patagonia. Passing through a sea route separating South America and Tierra del Fuego, which is nowadays named after him Strait of Magellan, he reached the Pacific Ocean. He called it the „Peaceful Sea“, because he suffered less storm throughout that part of the journey.

He then reached the Philippines. While he tried to force Christianity on the natives of Mactan Island, Magellan died in the Battle of Mactan.

Juan Sebastián Elcano then took the place of Magellan and pursued the circumnavigation. They reached their final destination: The Spice Islands. Laden with valuable spice, he then followed the way back across the Indian Ocean toward the Cape of Good Hope.

On 6 September 1522, Elcano and the remaining crew of 18 men arrived in Spain aboard the one remaining ship, the Victoria. The whole voyage took almost exactly three years.
