This was cache #10 while on a cache run for the North Carolina DeLorme Challenge (GCTYE6). This cache is on page 47, obviously.
I thought I was prepared for this one. I had the description, hint, trailhead co-ordinates, road maps and very rough aerial photos. What I didn't have was sunlight...or a partner... I got to the trailhead at 10:10PM. It was a great night for stargazing. It was a creepy night to go geocaching alone in the woods in an area described by my map as "The Great Dismal Swamp".
In an effort to gather all useful information, I called my dad, Jeo, in California to look up the letterboxing clues. Aw, who am I kidding? I needed someone to talk to while I walked the half mile into the unknown abyss. The last cache I found warned about snakes, bears and wolves. It was cold and dark. I pulled out both of my small flashlights in a futile attempt for more light. I turned on my second GPS with hopes that it would help me find the cache faster, so I could high-tail it back to my car.
My car. If only the trailhead wasn't blocked off. My car, the '63 travel BUG (tb#530138), could have brought me all but the last 100 feet. While walking I thought I heard a wolf. It was probably an owl or a neighboring dog, but I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something out there.
After about 25 minutes of walking, I got to the letterboxing clue... And then another... I ended up finding the cache based on the clues and not the GPSs. Thanks Dad! I signed the log, but didn't see an ink pad. I just took a picture of the stamp and then scribbled all over my stamp with a ballpoint pen before stamping the logbook.
Satisfied with this find, the walk back went much easier...but I still kept Dad on the line. I was relieved when I saw my car's running lights in the distance. I had left them on in case I had to call for help. Otherwise any help would have surely missed the overgrown turnout. I was in my car heading to the next DeLorme page at 11:10PM.
Thanks for hiding this cache and for giving me the opportunity to find Page Forty-Seven on page 47.
