About This Item

Helmets

1.       One crash kills most helmets. That Styrofoam layer between the shell and your head is your best friend. The expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) crushes under impact to give your head approximately 6/100ths of a second extra stopping time. That 6/100ths of a second can be the difference between you getting back up and riding off and having to relearn the alphabet. The foam also distributes the point of impact over a larger area.

2.       Proper Fit

Your helmet should neither dig into your scalp nor flop around. The better the fit the more protection you will have. To ensure proper adjustment start with the interior pads. Most are held in place with adhesive or hook and loop strips, which can be added or removed to customize fit or to wash when they get dirty. Next adjust the straps so that each V-buckle is positioned right below your ears, then cinch the main buckle so two fingers barely fit between your chin and the strap. To make sure the helmet is fitting correctly push the front of your helmet up. If it moves more than 1 inch, tighten the chin straps. Repeat with the back adjustment.

Not a new state for the nerd coin to visit, but a very pretty spot to spend some time. Quite historical, too.

The nerd coin is starting out a trip to Yellowstone with us. We thought it would like to see some familiar territory before heading farther west. Not too far from UW-Stout here!

The nerd coin visited our new Coin Cabin briefly before heading out west with us.

Visited 8/3/2011 sandlanders took it to Tunnel Rhymes with Funnel - The Dark Series Wisconsin - 43.5 miles  Visit Log

We took the nerd coin with us on the Elroy-Sparta Trail today. We were walking, but we saw lots of people riding bikes on this nice day. All of them were wearing helmets except for the group that was getting ready to go into the tunnel as we were leaving to go back down the trial. Eight kids and two adults, and NO ONE was wearing a helmet! They weren't practicing bike safety in other ways either, and they were goofing off quite a bit, too! Biking is fun, but we all need to be safe while doing it.

    • Where are the helmets???
Visited 7/16/2011 sandlanders took it to Geocaching -- Family Fun (2011) Wisconsin - 37.14 miles  Visit Log

The nerd coin was pretty shy at this event. (Actually, we forgot to bring him out for discovery!) No one came on a bicycle, but the cacher who came on his motorcycle was wearing a helmet. Smart man!

    • Nerd coin goes to a caching event.
Visited 7/13/2011 sandlanders took it to HC: The Gnome is Home Wisconsin - 247.59 miles  Visit Log

While the nerd coin was camping with us at Hartman Creek, we brought it along on a maintenance mission to one of our cache hides. This is a photo of the nerd coin with the new gnome. The old gnome looks like it flew over the bicycle handlebars without a helmet on. Well, actually, the gnome's head is in decent shape but the rest of the gnome isn't.

Visited 7/12/2011 sandlanders took it to Sandlander's Summer Home Wisconsin - 110.48 miles  Visit Log

We had the nerd coin with us on our annual July camping trip to Hartman Creek State Park, so we had it visit the tribute cache that Labrat put out for us commemorating our find #1000.

Retrieve It from a Cache 6/25/2011 sandlanders retrieved it from Two Scores and a Decade Later... Wisconsin   Visit Log

Zoesbrother is getting a bit lax with his nerd coin. He had it for over five months and never recorded any action for it. When we saw him at the birthday event in Eagle River, he gave it back to us to take on our summer travels and give it some adventures. Gave it to him at a birthday event in January, got it back from him at a birthday event in June.

So now we have the nerd coin officially and physically back in our possession, so on with the adventures! 😈

Dropped Off 6/25/2011 sandlanders placed it in Two Scores and a Decade Later... Wisconsin - 104.52 miles  Visit Log

The nerd coin was technically dropped off in this event by zoesbrother. We're recording the action for him.

Retrieve It from a Cache 1/8/2011 sandlanders retrieved it from Sweet Treats & Meet and Greet Part Deux Wisconsin   Visit Log

OK. We're pretending to be zoesbrother, since he never "retrieved" the nerd coin from this event where we gave it to him in January. He had it for a while then gave it back to us to take on our summer travels.
