About This Item

Helmets

1.       One crash kills most helmets. That Styrofoam layer between the shell and your head is your best friend. The expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) crushes under impact to give your head approximately 6/100ths of a second extra stopping time. That 6/100ths of a second can be the difference between you getting back up and riding off and having to relearn the alphabet. The foam also distributes the point of impact over a larger area.

2.       Proper Fit

Your helmet should neither dig into your scalp nor flop around. The better the fit the more protection you will have. To ensure proper adjustment start with the interior pads. Most are held in place with adhesive or hook and loop strips, which can be added or removed to customize fit or to wash when they get dirty. Next adjust the straps so that each V-buckle is positioned right below your ears, then cinch the main buckle so two fingers barely fit between your chin and the strap. To make sure the helmet is fitting correctly push the front of your helmet up. If it moves more than 1 inch, tighten the chin straps. Repeat with the back adjustment.

The nerd coin got really "up close and personal" with a glacier at this cache. We had to carry it all the way with us, though, since it was too lazy to get out and hike the trail by itself! 😉

    • How do you like those crevasses, nerd coin?

Seeing that the nerd coin is from Selzzup, we figured that it would feel right at home looking for a nano on a sign at this cache! 😉 Fun story behind the design for the Alaskan state flag. We went to two caches in Alaska that highlighted this.

Our last day in Alaska! The nerd coin was up bright and early with us today to walk down to the water from our hotel, then over to tour the Alaska SeaLife Center, then to find this cache.

Visited 8/1/2012 sandlanders took it to Anchorage - Big Wild Life Alaska - 177.14 miles  Visit Log

This was another chance we had to get rid of... um... drop off the nerd coin, but again, it only visited here. This cache was within easy walking distance of our hotel in Anchorage. Great location!

    • The nerd coin has made it to Anchorage now.

Visited 7/31/2012 sandlanders took it to Denali Travel Bug Lodge Alaska - 32.05 miles  Visit Log

Found a TB cache about 0.6 miles from our Denali lodging, so the nerd coin and I walked down to check it out. (Mr. S rested up his knee in the chalet while I took my walk.) The nerd coin didn't want to stay in the TB lodge, so we'll continue to have it on our Alaskan travels with us.

    • close-up of the nerd on the tree It fell off from here and nearly bounced over the edge!

Had to get the nerd coin to a cache in Denali NP, even if the colorful teal didn't show up at Polychrome Pass.

The nerd coin was with us when we rode the train from Fairbanks to Denali, and it was with us when we flew around the summit of Mt. McKinley, but it didn't show itself until we went looking for a cache near where we were staying. Brave nerd coin!
