Current Goal

The Rusty Spike wants to travel the country, visiting railroad yards, railroad museums and other areas of railroad history. It would also like to meet up with its cousin, The Golden Spike, near Promontory Point, Utah, at the Golden Spike National Historic Site. This guy is really getting a workout too. Let's hope he continues his travels. Here's where he's been so far.

About This Item

The Rusty Spike

The Rusty Spike was forced to stay in one spot for many years, while watching trains travel by, taking goods and people to places unknown. Now that the Rusty Spike has been freed from its earthly bounds, it too, wants to travel far and wide.

The Rusty Spike wants to travel from cache to cache having it's picture taken next to locomotive engines, railroad yards, railroad museums, and railroad historic sites.

Traveling by rail to other caches would be a dream come true for the Rusty Spike. It has always wanted to take a ride on the Reading Railroad, or take the trip from Durango to Silverton in Colorado. Meeting its cousin, the Golden Spike in Utah, would be a highlight as well.

The Rusty Spike has no itinerary, but will rely on the cache hunter to come up with new and interesting adventures for it to take. With this Travel Bug, the journey is the goal.

How interesting to find this TB so close to Mossdale Crossing, the site of the ACTUAL final link in the Transcontinental Railroad. On September 8, 1889 the first train crossed over the bridge at Mossdale, spanning the San Joaquin River.

For more information and pictures, see the waymark "Mossdale Crossing - The final link of the Transcontinental Railroad" at www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMKAP.

I will move the TB along soon. Thanks for the fun!

What a great day. Took the family and Rusty Spike to Golden Spike National Historic Site. It was a beautiful day. We weren't able to see the train engines run because they were brought in for the winter, but we were able to get to see them up close and personal. We went on a free tour that allowed us to go into the bunker and see them and take pictures. They are amazing and very beautiful. Even all the kids had a good time. We brought them kicking and screaming. They didn't want to go to some silly historic site. It was well worth the trip for the entire family.

Rusty Spike was dissapointed to learn that Golden Spike no longer lives at the Golden Spike National Hisoric Site. He is now living in California. However, it just so happens that Golden Spike was visiting today. It was a great reunion. Rusty is hopefull that he will make it to Califronia to see where Golden Spike lives. What's even more exciting is that Golden Spike decided to tag along. He wants to see how this geo caching works.

Take a look at the pics and see for yourself how much fun we had. Thanks for the fun and rewarding experience Rusty Spike. We will miss you! Have fun on your travels. Hopefully we will see you again.

  • Golden Spike National Historic Site Golden spike National Historic Site welcome sign with rusty Spike and GPS.
  • Rusty Spike at Golden Spike plaque Rusty is having a great time swapping memories with golden Spike.
  • Rusty Spike remembers This is bringing back memories for Rusty. However, he is glad to be a cacher so he can see the world.
  • Rusty Spike with Biggestc We really enjoyed the tour of the Engine House. Very beautiful and original.
  • Jupiter I don't know if you can imagine how large the wheels of this engine are. My son, who won't allow me to take a picture of him reluctantly agreed to let me take a pic of his back (yes, he is a teenager who never combs his hair.)to show how large these engines really are. My son is approximately 5 feet tall. My son is standing on the floor but the engines are sitting down under the floor a couple of inches. Tour Guide is on the right.
  • Family Fun My family having fun sitting on the train tracks in front of the Golden Spike Plaque.
  • Baby Cacher I put this in because even though it's blurry, it's so cute. Everyone is always fighting to hold the GPS. Baby always wins.
