Current Goal

We are following multiple ISTE travel bugs and we'd like to see which travels the farthest, which meets the most people, and which gets the closest to the Pennsylvania Convention Center by June 26, 2011 when ISTE's Annual Conference and Exposition begins. Everyone involved in moving an ISTE travel bug that achieves one of these goals will be entered into a drawing for a signed copy of GPS and Geocaching in Education by Burt Lo. When you find the ISTE Travel Bug, please take a picture and share a fact about the location. We would like to learn about each place the ISTE Travel Bug visits. We will be posting the pictures and facts submitted on the ISTE.org website for teachers and students to follow.

Couldn't let go of this TB without visiting and earth cache! Welcome to The La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, CA. This tar pit(s) is one of the world’s most famous fossil site for having the largest and most diverse collection of extinct Ice Age plants and animals. Mammals, birds and insects would, inadvertently, come into contact with the asphalt and become trapped. This cycle repeated it self for 30,000 years. To this day, mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates find themselves trapped in the asphalt.

Welcome to Carlson Park in Culver City, CA! Dr. Paul Earle Carlson was a medical missionary of a church that served in Wasolo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the early 1960s. At this time, The Congo had been given independence from Belgium and insurgents fought to gain power. Carlson was falsely accused of being an American spy and was killed during a rescue attempt by American and Belgian troops. Dr. Carlson was born in Culver City, California. The park and neighborhood are named in honor of him.

The artist used the natural setting of Carlson Park as a departure point for this design. Tree of Life is a three-sided sculpture that incorporates images of plants, flowers, and various animals into each of the panels.
Visited 2/28/2011 U_Dac took it to Santa Monica Pier California - .26 miles  Visit Log

The Santa Monica Pier is advertised as "The End of Route 66". However, two other intersections (Olympic Blvd/Lincoln Blvd and Santa Monica/Ocean Avenue) are believed to be the official end of the highway. The pier does mark the end of Colorado Avenue and The Los Angeles Marathon route!

Since this TB is headed east, I thought it should start at as far west as I could take it. Welcome to the Santa Monica Pier! This pier is a little over 100 hundred years old. Sadly, it was built to hide a sewer pipe that empties into the ocean, but has attracted fishermen, businesses and tourists. In the early 1980's a storm destroyed parts of the pier and took most of the decade to restore the pier to what it is today.
