Current Goal

Wandering Tracks began their journey under the midnight sun at the Arctic Circle in Alaska, a committment to a new life of discovery, strength of character, generosity, and mis-adventures! May our hearts and tracks take us to places we yearn to see for ourselves and never lose the exhilaration of learning and exploring our beautiful earth! We wish this coin to go before us and see the world as our ambassadors.

9/16/2014 This geocoin deactivated as the Gold Ingot was stolen and a yellow lego piece was returned to us.

About This Item

Wandering Tracks enjoyed many years of gold panning in Alaska, happy to have shovel, pans and sluice box in as many creeks as possible. One of our favorites and close to home was Pedro Creek, famous for being ground zero for a gold rush in 1902!

Felix Pedro discovered gold in the Tanana Hills northeast of Fairbanks on or about July 22, 1902 in a small unnamed stream (now known as "Pedro Creek") northeast of Fairbanks, prompting him to exclaim "There's gold in them there hills", and triggering a full-scale gold rush. In 1947, the Felix Pedro Monument was erected at mile 16.1 of the Steese Highway north of Fairbanks, near Pedro Creek. Since that time, the annual Fairbanks Golden Days celebration begins with a rededication of the Felix Pedro Monument. The Alaskaland Park in mid-town Fairbanks, originally opened in 1967 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Alaska Purchase from the Russian Empire, was renamed Pioneer Park on July 22nd, 2002, at the 100th anniversary of Pedro's gold discovery. http://fairbanks-alaska.com/gold-rush-history.htm

Found this wandering tracks gold ingot in a very nice cache on the Crescent Trail in Perinton, NY. Since it is a gold ingot, I will take it to Colorado when we return there for the summer. In the meantime I can put it in and out of caches so it will get some mileage. Just think that one gold rush deserves another--and Colorado mined gold, silver and many other minerals in the late nineteenth century. (And still does some of that today.) 🙂
