About This Item

In 2014, Alaska just celebrated its 55th year of statehood, 3 January 1959.

Major industries include mining, fishing, forestry, aerospace and tourism.

The origin of its name is a Russian version of an Aleutian Indian name, Alakshax, meaning peninsula.  Wikipedia has it listed as alaxsxaq meaning "the mainland".  Alyeska is another name meaning "great land".

Alaska covers 656,425 square miles.  If the state was split into two halves, Texas would become the 3rd largest state.  Texas covers only 268,820 square miles.

The population of Alaska is 731,000 with most of the people living along the coast.  Anchorage is the most populous city with 260,000 people.  Fairbanks is a distant 2nd with 31,500.  The capital city of Juneau also has around 31,000 people.

There are a lot of geocaches in this great state.  If you drive from Fairbanks to Anchorage and want to cache along the way, what normally takes 6 1/2 hours might turn into a couple of days!

    Here's the story. This TB has been stuck in a Inupiaq village since August. Covid limited travel and there were no caches in the area until we placed and published the White Mountain Cache iin mid May. However, yours was one of the lucky ones. When we were in Anchorage for new teacher training, we placed those we had brought along in a cache - with the exception of 4 that were placed elsewhere in the luggage and we didn't locate them until we were in White Mountain. All those we placed in the cache in Anchorage came up missing, so yours didn't end up being bugnapped. We returned to the lower 48 for a few months and your TB did some traveling with us. We're flying back today and your TB will be placed in a deluxe TB resort before we head back.
