About This Item

With their black backs and white bellies, common murres are the closest thing to penguins in the cool northern oceans! The common murre has the uncommon ability to dive over 100 metres to catch its dinner, mostly for small schooling fish such as herring. That's like diving to the ground from the top of a 25-storey building for a meal! These seabirds spend the majority of their lives out at sea, only coming ashore to breed during the summer. They are well-adapted to ocean life, can dive before learning to fly, and are better at swimming and diving than flying. Common murres can remain underwater for up to  two minutes. They don't make nests, instead laying their eggs—specially shaped to prevent them from rolling off—on bare rock ledges on cliff faces. The common murre is often killed accidentally as fisheries bycatch and from chronic oil leaks and spills in waters off the B.C. coast. While their nesting site on Triangle Island (where 95 per cent of the province's seabirds breed) is protected, they remain vulnerable out at sea where they forage for food for their young.

I spotted this TB while out in the field during the GAG21 event in Ottawa. I had the pleasure of visiting Tofino in 2003 during a cross Canada trip after I finished my undergraduate degree. It was an amazing experience. I decided to wander off into the forest just out side of town and the superposition of life and death surrounding you from all direction in the forest is amazing. It changed my perspective on life.
