The cache was placed on Christmas Day by Gum-Ako and extended family - to celebrate the location and also the fact that as well, the family were home for Christmas. The has been a geocache nearby in the past, but muggled and so delisted - but we think the spot is worth a second go.
The wells were first dug by local indigenous people well before white settlement in the area. Although offically the area was Port Gawler, collquially the small settlement was known as Two Wells. The distance of a day's journey by bullock and dray from Adelaide meant that the facilities were well used. Following modernisation of transport and water systems, the precise location of the wells was lost. It was by chance that a local boy scavenging through the town dump stumbled upon (and nearly in)a well, during the early 1960s. Adults investigated and the second well was found. The locals were excited by the historic find and even more so by the publishing of a picture of 7 local kids (including me!) on page 7 of the Advertiser! Community work ensured that the site was made safe and area tidied up, ready for reopening as a small park in 1967.
