About Kate
Kate is raised in Iowa, and she is the daughter of a soldier, and a waitress in a diner. While growing up she learns how to read tracks in the wild from her father, an avid outdoorsman who once took her into the woods to track deer for eight hours.

Kate's parents divorce and Kate's mother Diane would later marry Wayne, an alcoholic who physically abused Diane. While Kate making a scrapbook as a present for her father, she discovered the man whom she thought was her biological father was still in Korea when she was conceived; she then realizes Wayne is her biological father. Kate takes out an insurance policy and blows up her house with Wayne inside, meaning to benefit her mother. She explains this to her mother and fled, but she is captured at a bus station by U.S. marshal Edward Mars, who claims Kate's mother went to the authorities with what Kate had told her.

En route to the indictment hearing for Wayne's murder, a large black horse appeares in front of the Marshal's car, causing him to swerve off the road. While the marshal is still stunned from the air bag deployment, Kate takes his keys. After a brief tussle, Kate knocks him out of the car and drives off.

Following her escape, Kate travels around the country with a car trunk full of license plates from various states, using hair dye to disguise her appearance.

When Kate receives word her mother was dying from cancer, Kate takes a chance and goes home. There she meets and reignites her childhood romance with Tom Brennan, now married and a doctor at the hospital. The two dig up a time capsule they had buried 15 years earlier, which contains a tape recording and a selection of Tom's toys, including a little toy airplane. Tom is convinced by Kate to arrange a visit with her mother, who is being guarded in the chance her daughter would make an appearance. Once Kate reveals herself to her mother, Diane begins screaming for help, and Kate is forced to flee. She asks Tom for his car keys, but he demands to go with her, saying the police would be easy on her if she cooperates. Kate speeds towards a police car blockading the entrance of the parking garage, and an officer fires off a few shots as she passes, but she crashes into another car. Kate turns to Tom and sees he is dead. Kate flees the scene, leaving behind the toy airplane.

Kate is involved in an elaborate bank robbery in New Mexico, in which she presents herself to the bank manager as an innocent bystander. In actuality she is romantically linked with the bank robbers' supposed leader. Posing as "Maggie Ryan" applying for a loan, Kate is rounded up by the robbers as one of the hostages. When another hostage overpowers one of the robbers, Kate grabs one of their guns, but is unable to use it. The lead robber takes Kate into a back room, and after a quick kiss, hits her so as to continue the ruse. The robber brings in the bank manager and claims he would kill the seemingly innocent "Maggie", unless the vault is opened. Thinking he was saving her life, the bank manager complies. In the vault, the robber reveals Kate had actually planned and organized the entire operation. The robber, intent on shooting the manager, is stopped by Kate, who retaliates by shooting the robber in the leg. Then, she forces the manager to open a safe deposit box. Inside the box was a single item: Tom's toy airplane.

Later on, Kate (under the alias "Monica") meets a police officer named Kevin (Nathan Fillion) and eventually settles down with him in Miami, Florida. On the day of marriage, Kevin's mother gives Kate a gold chain with a trinket on it that was supposed to go to her daughter. Since she had four boys, "Monica" is the closest thing she will have to a daughter. Meanwhile, Kate calls Edward Mars from a phone booth. She sets a timer (supposedly it went off one second before they could trace her call) and begs him to stop looking for her because she is happy. Mars tells her he would stop chasing her only if she really settled down, but that he knows she would never stop running. Afterwards, Kevin reveals he bought two tickets to Costa Rica (also on Oceanic Airlines) for a honeymoon. After a home pregnancy test she takes shows two blue lines, Kate decides to come clean. She drugs his tea so he won't remember the conversation and lose his job. She tells him she is a fugitive, her name isn't Monica, and she almost had a baby. Kevin, a little woozy from the drugs, is emotionally struck by this revelation. After he falls unconscious to the floor, Kate places the gold chain in his hand as she leaves.

Kate turns up in Australia, using the name "Annie" and claiming to be Canadian. She arrives at the house of an Outback farmer, who, in exchange for help around his farm, offers her a wage and a home. After several months, Kate attempts to sneak out of the house. The farmer catches her before she leaves, and insists he drive her to the train station the next morning.

On the road, their truck is followed by Edward Mars. After confronted by Kate, the farmer admits that he saw Kate's picture on a wanted poster at the post office and turned her in for the cash reward (later revealed to be $23,000; 23 is one of the numbers). Kate grabs the wheel and drives off the road, rolling the truck. Despite being free to escape, Kate pulls the injured farmer away from the wreck, giving the marshal time to capture her.

Immediately prior to the flight, the marshal reveals to an Australian law enforcement officer that he had been chasing the character Kate for three years, and he had put the toy airplane in the safe deposit box as bait. He now had the toy airplane in his possession, presumably having recovered it from Kate's possessions after capturing her.

On board Flight 815, she sits handcuffed beside the marshal. Just prior to the crash, she asks the marshal for a favor, which she later claims was to make sure the farmer received the reward for turning her in. As the plane breaks apart, the marshal is injured. Kate steals the keys to her handcuffs, but made sure to apply the marshal's oxygen mask before putting on her own.
