septembre 1918, l’une des plus significative bataille de la
Première Guerre Mondiale est livrée par la 1ère armée
expéditionnaire Américaine (AEF) et le 2ème corps d'armée colonial
Français, sous le commandement du Général John J. Pershing:
“LA BATAILLE DE SAINT MIHIEL“.
Les forces alliées disposent d'un matériel Américano - Franco -
Anglais important de 1444 avions, 3100 canons et 267 tanks. Leurs
font face plusieurs corps d'armée Allemands, défendant des
tranchées profondes, allant de Verdun à Pont à Mousson.
L'attaque se fait de trois côtés; le 5ème corps US donne
l’assaut de la face ouest du saillant, pendant que le 1er et
le 4ème corps US progressent au sud-est vers Thiaucourt et Montsec;
le 2ème corps d'armée colonial Français attaque le secteur de
Saint-Mihiel. Dès le 13 septembre, les objectifs principaux sont
atteints et même dépassés: le Saillant de Saint-Mihiel est libéré,
au prix de 7000 pertes alliées et la capture de 15000 prisonniers
et 257 canons Allemands.
Deux sites commémorent la réduction du Saillant de Saint Mihiel.
Ils sont gérés par la Commission des monuments de guerre américains
(ABMC),
une agence gouvernementale. La libre disposition du terrain fut
concédée, à perpétuité, par le peuple français:

~ Le Mémorial Américain de la Butte de Montsec
(GCNX5G).
Le Cimetière
et Mémorial Américain de Saint Mihiel, à Thiaucourt couvre 17
hectares et renferme 4153 sépultures de soldats Américains qui
tombèrent, en grande partie lors de la réduction du saillant. Le
site est ouvert tous les jours de 9h00 à 17h00 sauf le 25 décembre
et le 01 janvier mais demander confirmation à l'office du cimetière
+33 383.80.01.01.
La visite en est gratuite.

From 12 to
16 September 1918, one of the most significant battles of World War
One was fought by the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) and II
French Colonial Corps, commanded by General John J. Pershing:
“THE BATTLE OF SAINT MIHIEL”.
The allied forces had an important material American - French -
English of 1.444 planes, 3.100 guns and 267 tanks. They faced to
several German armies who were defending a series of in depth
trenches started in Verdun to Pont a Mousson.
The offensive plan required simultaneous attacks; V Corps would
assault the west face of the salient, while I & IV Corps were
driving against the southeast face. Meanwhile the II French
Colonial Corps was to make an attack against the nose. As of
September 13, the principal objectives are achieved and even
exceeded: the Salient of Saint Mihiel is released, at a cost of
about 7.000 casualties and the capture of 15.000 prisoners and 257
German guns (More info).
Two sites commemorate the reduction of the Salient of Saint Mihiel.
Both are managed by the Commission of the American monuments of
war (ABMC),
a government
agency. The free provision of the ground was conceded, with
perpetuity, by the French people:

The World
War I St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial (Thiaucourt)
covering 40.5 acres, contains the graves of 4,153 American military
dead, most of them during the reduction of the salient. The
cemetery is open daily to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm except
December 25 and January 1 but ask for confirmation to the office
+33 383.80.0101.
When the cemetery is open to the public, a staff member is on duty
in the Visitors’ Building to answer questions and escort
relatives to grave and memorial sites.
The visit is free of charge.
