Geocache Description:

Multistage Puzzle Cache highlighting several historic
features on Edisto

Stage I
The story begins at what once had been Bailey’s General Store and Post Office .
The Bailey house was built about 1825 but not on this site.
It was originally built for the Bailey family as a summer home in the village of Edingsville Bay. Edingsville was a barrier island right off Edisto used as a resort by the wealthy plantation owners to escape the summer heat and mosquitoes on the main island. (Imagine that!!!!) The house was moved from Edingsville (floated up Store Creek I was told) sometime before 1893 when a devastating hurricane washed away most of what the War (of Northern Aggression as it is politely called here) and reconstruction had left of Edingsville .(Only a narrow sand bar exists today) The house faced in the opposite direction when it was first moved here. It was turned around to its present orientation when the old road was straightened and a new bridge over Store Creek was built (in the 1940’s). It was the first store on Edisto and the Post Office used one of the rooms in the house. At some point it became necessary to build an addition for the Post Office (see photo). Eventually a new Post office (which has also been outgrown in the last several years) was built further down Hwy 174 toward the beach.. In 1988 after renovation and expansion, the dilapidated old post office reopened as a fine low country dining establishment and Bailey’s General Store has become a unique gift shop. The restaurant in again undergoing renovation and is closed at this time.
************************************************************
Because of renovation on the building, changing the calculation to determine co-ordinates for Stage II
************************************************************
While at Stage I:
1.What is the route number of the highway in front of
the store?? =a b c

2.Looking at the front left of the building--What is the total number of small window panes in the 4 second story windows (above the entry to the craft store) = d e

3. a b c d e + 12006 = A B C D E

4. F = d e/16

*********checksum A+B+C+D+E+F=28************************

Co-ordinates for Stage II
32 33.(ABC+385)
80 16.(DEF+456)

Stage II
Once you get to this location, you are on what is left of the old King’s Highway also once called “de highball pike”.
This highway was laid in Colonial times (1700’s) coming from Charleston and bits and pieces of it can be found in several locations in and around Charleston and Colleton counties. This is all that is left of it here on Edisto and it was preserved because of its scenic beauty. Both ends of the road connect with the highway so you can enter and exit from either end. On this road you will find the co-ordinates for the last stage in a small well hid container. Please make sure you replace the co-ordinates in the container and rehide.

Clue: At Stage II Be Proud-- Look down and around
What you seek is close to the ground

Stage III
Here at Stage III is another parcel of land preserved by the Edisto Island Open Land Trust. These scenic areas are open to the public for their enjoyment. The EIOLT is striving to protect as much land as possible—especially along HWY 174. There is plenty of room to park safely along the highway The cache container is an ammo can. Please enjoy your visit!!!

Because of tree cover at Stages II and III, you will most likely find the GPSr acting pretty squirrelly. See the encrypted hints for additional assistance.
