City of the Departed Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

caughtatwork: Alas, after checking the cache this morning, it is indeed missing. There has been an amount of garden work near GZ so has likely been cleaned up. As the area is now quite exposed, I shan't be replacing the cache at this location.

Geocache Description:

The 70th cache by caughtatwork takes you to the City of the Departed.

Half a day on horse from the town on the Yarra, Keilor cemetery has been in operation since 1856. It was the final resting place for pioneers of the growing colony and for those travelling the weary road to the goldfields of Ballarat and Bendigo.

In October 1857 a note in the Victorian Government Gazette advised on the appointment of trustees for the ground set apart at Keilor as a site for a general cemetery.

The first burial, however, had taken place in April 1856 when Ellen Blanche, the nine-year-old daughter of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Bonfield was laid to rest.

Many members of Keilor's pioneer families are buried in the cemetery. A large proportion of these early settlers were from Ireland, Scotland and England, with many of the graves still in a good state of preparation.

Today Keilor cemetery is just 20 minutes from the centre
of Melbourne by CityLink and the Calder Freeway or Western Ring Road and is the only viable cemetery in Melbourne’s northwest. The cemetery is still in use today and has future expansion plans.

You are seeking a 2 litre sistema container disguised to match the surroundings. The cache itself is around 10-15m from any grave site and as you seek the cache, the foliage should be enough to keep you away from prying eyes. Please be respectful as you approach the cache location. There are at least two ways in which do not require you to cross any graves.

The cache you seek is a section of the cemetery which gives you a feeling of walking through a city of the departed although you won't need to disturb any of those who have departed in order to find the cache.

Please note that the cemetery is open from 7:00am to dusk every day of the week. Even though the cemetery gates are not locked, I recommend you adhere to the posted opening times and not attempt the cache after dark. Strange people wandering through cemeteries after dark are likely to be reported to the police.

I hope you enjoy the cache and the surroundings.
