Cadair Ifan Goch (Red Ifan's Seat) was the once the seat of Ifan
Goch, a giant who would sit here bathing his feet in the River
Conwy (Afon Conwy) below. Nowadays it offers splendid views up and
down the Conwy Valley (Dyffryn Conwy) for all to enjoy.
Free but limited parking is available at N53 10.921 W3
48.343.
The paths approaching the cache are clear, well defined and
signposted but run through private woodland, so stick to the path!
The actual viewpoint area though is National Trust and therefore is
right to roam so please feel free to wander round and locate the
cache! You'll need to! Whilst not dangerous, a sense of adventure
maybe needed to get the cache. If you spot the memorial slab of
slate, you're on the right track.
Remember to take a photo if the view is good!
Update - 19th August 2007
The land owner of the land surrounding Cadair Ifan Goch has got
in contact and had this positive feedback. I thought fellow cachers
would appreciate the information.
The woodland is classed as Planted Ancient Woodland which is
one of the most important for conservation. Now that the woodland
is no longer managed comercially, one of the greatest conservation
threats is the effect of ground compaction on several rare species
of fungi that are found here, and the invertebrates that feed on
them - So we are grateful for your request that people stay on the
paths!
We are currently restoring it to a much higher proportion of
broadleaved native trees. Over the next couple of years we will be
starting to very slowly thin the conifers on the slope below the
viewpoint - so over the next decade or so that view will gradually
change and hopefully one day will return to self sustaining
woodland.
